SCDR012 - Information Successor (Beatservice)
An amazing collection of experimental narrative tracks. There are 99 in all, and as soon as I get around to deciphering them all on the cover art, I'll transcribe them here.

SCDR011 - Mark Hollis (Polydor UK)
Stunning solo album from front man of early 80's new wave giants Talk Talk. Emotional and evocative. Available only as an expensive import, and hard to find at that. This is added by multiple requests.

SCDR010 - Various Artists The Sin of Surface Noise (Vol. 2)
This, the second in a series of CDRs which celebrates the warmth and sizzly ambience of vinyl, shellac and polystyrene, collects individual tracks all mastered from 78 RPM records from my collection. All are blues or R&B, and some even predate the coronation of rock itself. There may be some discourse as to whether these are on-topic for WZBC. All I can say is I have worked almost all of the tracks here into my own NCP programming. None of them would ever be heard on the oldies stations.

1. John Perry - Love Crazy (Rama 1953) This is an early release from a label that would become one of the largest R&B labels in NYC, giving us many rock standards.

2. The Robins - Framed (Spark 1954) A classic from the group that would become The Coasters and break nationally with many many chart hits.

3. Lonnie Johnson - My Woman Is Gone (Rama 1953) A classic blues shouter.

4. The Empires - Corn Whiskey (Empire 1954) Great NY Booze jump tune.

5. Chuck Higgins - Motor Head Baby (Combo 1953) Los Angeles blues rock.

6. The Pearls - Lets You & I Go Steady (Onyx 1956) A great rocker from the label that would go on to become MGM's subsidiary, Cub.

7. Pigmeat Peterson - Everybody Loves A Fat Man (Federal 1952) Perhaps my own theme?

8. Billy Wright - Four Cold Cold Walls (Savoy 1951) Another LA singer on this classic Newark label. He was openly gay, which was professional suicide, especially for a black performer, and rumor has it he was rejected from Specialty records because they "already had one faggot (referring to Little Richard) and that was enough."

9. Al Hibbler - Fat and Forty (Chess 1951) A wonderful Chicago blues tune, almost crossing over into big-band territory.

10. Dorothy Logan - Small Town Man (Drexel 1954) A really racey tune from Chicago.

11. Louise Baker & The Ebony Moods - I've Got News For You (Theron 1955) Before you hurt someone you'd better think twice...

12. Zilla Mays And Her Blues Caravan featuring Her Boyfriends - Why Do You Cry (Brunswick 1953) I don't know that much about this one. A great tune, though.

13. Roscoe Thorne - Delores (Atlas 1953) This one is in kinda rough shape. It's a classic example of early street-singing ballad harmony. It is an >extremely< rare record, a clean copy on 45 fetching up to $5000 in collector circles. The backing group is not credited, but believed to be The Fi-Tones.

14. The Angels - Leaving You Baby (Irma 1956) Great girl-group sound.

15. Jimmy Brinkley - Midnight Wale (Chance 1953) Tough, Chicago inner-city R&B sax instrumental. Chance was a pivotal label in the Chicago independent label scene in the early 50's. They launched the careers of several famous groups, such as the Flamingos, the Moonglows and the Spaniels.

16 Lucky Davis & His Blues Kings- Climbing Up To Heaven Blues (Atlantic 1950)

17. Lucky Davis and His Blues Kings - Cold Love (Atlantic 1950) - Really great, tense blues.

18 Wynona Carr - Should I ever Love Again (Specialty 1957) Los Angeles lamenting sound.

19. Joe Smith - Dedicated To You (Cal West 1955) This is really a fantastic timeless ballad. Listen to the guitar playing on this! A lesser version was covered by Sonny Knight (Starla Records) which charted nationally. This is the first version.

20. Eddie "Tex" Curtis- Brown (Gee 1954) This is the capstone tune of this collection. It's a stunning spiritual about a black man coming to terms with his victimization of racism. Singing about "brown", the color of his skin, he sings "but God never pushes me behind, God makes no trouble for my kind, God evidently doesn't mind...there's lotsa brown folks in heaven." This is an early release on another George Goldner imprint, the Gee label, named for the hit record which broke his Rama imprint nationally, and which years later gave us Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, The Cleftones, the Regents (orignal version of "Barbara Ann") and much more.

SCDR009 - Various Artists As Yet Untitled (Realization) RZD001
1991 noise compilation from California, featuring Randy Greif, PBK, Hands To, AMK, John Wiggins, The Haters, Illsuion of Safety, and more.

SCDR008 - Various Artists The Sin of Surface Noise (Vol. 1)
This series of CDRs culls songs out of my collection of vinyl. This particular one grew out of a request from ZBC DJ Sue for the Crash Course in Science 7" "Kitchen Motors". Here is the track listing and some info. Tracks 1 - 7 are all the tracks on "A Factory Sample", the very first vinyl project put out by Factory Records. It features one of the earliest packaging designs by Peter Saville, credited only as "Peter" on the sleeve. Featured here are 2 tracks by Joy Division, which I'm sure we already have but are included here for the sake of completeness. Also, two tracks from Durutti Column, one track consisting of 3 songs from John Dowie, and two early tracks from Cabaret Voltaire.
1. Joy Division - Digital
2. Joy Division - Glass
3. Durutti Column - No Communication
4. Durutti Column - Thin Ice (detail)
5a. John Dowie - Acne
5b. John Dowie - Idiot
5c. John Dowie - Hitler's Liver
6. Cabaret Volta ire - Baader Meinhof
7. Cabaret Voltaire - Sex In Secret

Track 8 is from an obscure geek-electronics band from Toronto. As far as I know, they put out an LP (The Absence of a Canary) and this single which includes a non-LP B-Side
8. Ceramic Hello - Climatic [sic] Nouveaux (Mannequin records)

9. Metabolist - Identify (Dromm Records)

10. Mag & The Suspects - Erection (London)

99 records came back in the limelight a few years ago when the Liquid Liquid stuff was reissued on CD and exact duplicates of the 12" EPs appeared. But this single is what put the label on the map outside of the Village.
11. Bush tetras - Too Many Creeps (99 records)

Track 12 is a rare Japanese 7", sounding like a more raw Plastics.
12. Boys Boys - Monkey Monkey (Pass Records)

13. Ludus - My Cherry Is In Sherry (New Hormones records)

Tracks 14 - 16 are the requested tracks. The band also has a 12" EP which will appear on a future volume.
14. Crash Course In Science - Cakes In the Home (Go Go Records)
15. Crash Course In Science - Kitchen Motors
16. Crash Course In Science - Mechanical Breakdown

With the recent add of the Homosexuals LP on Recommended (Thanks Carl!), I thought it would be good to include these two songs from The Homosexuals incredibly hard to find single.
17. The Homosexuals - In Search of the Perfect Baby (7 Records)
18. The Homosexuals - Nursery Chimes

Next one is a another rare 7" single from Factory, released in 1979.
19. The Distractions - Time Goes By So Slow (Factory)

This is an early release from Cherry Red Records, a staple in the ZBC library over the years. It's #2 in the Cherry red catalog.
20. The Tights - Howard Hughes (Cherry red)

The last track is a song from a single by the band that Vini Riley appeared in before forming the Durutti Column. Released 1977.
21. The Nosebleeds - Ain't Been To No Music School (Rabid Records)

SCDR007 - Various Artists A Conclusion of Unrestrained Philospohy (Livevil) LMCD-1040
Rare Japanese compilation featuring exclusive tracks from Human Flesh, Die Form, Muslimgauze, We Be Echo, P16.D4 and lots more.

SCDR006 - Various Artists A Blind Man's Gallery of Mirrors (Freedom In A Vacuum) vaccd.05
This CD compiles live performances given in the notable Freedom In A Vacuum performance series which took place annually in the Toronto Music Gallery. Featured artists include Randy Grief, Edward Ka-Spel, IAM Umbrella, Dive, Sigillum S and more.

SCDR005 - Agents With False Memories [Ash International] - ASH 5.1
One 50+ minute compsition from richard kirk of [Cabaret Voltaire] fame.

SCDR004 - [alio die] The Hidden Spring [Crowd Control] crowded4
This CD compiles rare track from this brilliant Italian ambient artist, and includes a few tracks available nowhere else.

SCDR003 - A Small Good Thing [Block] [Leaf Records] Bay 2
This is their 4th album, the first for Leaf after sevral releases for Soleilmoon. Starting out as a side project of [O Yuki Conjugate], this band quickly took on a life of its own, becoming more prolific than OYC. Other reference points are The Sons of Silence, rapoon, zoviet France and Paul Schutze.

SCDR002 - [Air Liquide] Red [sm:)e communications] CD 8015
A rare CD on the sm;)e imprint. Nice, robotic dark electronic music.
[Discography]

SCDR001 -
[Arco] Coming To Terms + Ending Up EP [Dreamy Records] - REM009 + REM002
I think the Coming To Terms CD is one of the best slowcore records made. It's kind of a hybrid of Belle and Sebastian and Low. Also included here is the EP, somewhat less restrained and dirtier.
